How does EMDR Therapy work?

You’ve probably heard of EMDR therapy from the news–Prince Harry and Oprah are talking about it, amongst others. Why is EMDR having a moment? EMDR therapy makes it possible for you to face painful memories, reprocess them and move forward with confidence. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy and it utilizes bilateral stimulation like eye movements or tapping to tax your working memory while you mindfully hold distressing memories. It has an 8 phase protocol that clinicians are held to in order to contain and guide the therapy effectively.

Clients often enter my office feeling stuck–repeating their same patterns of unhealthy behaviors with their partners or family members, and unsure of why. They know better, but it’s not enough. They know they need to set boundaries, and they do, but maintaining them when someone is guilt-tripping them is another thing. They try to stay calm but find themselves unable to manage their anger when a surprise sets them off.

The good news? You’re human and you’re not alone! EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that has helped many with PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc. In EMDR therapy, you address your painful memories without rehashing details or retriggering your traumatic reactions–you shift your body’s reactions to that past event, altering your core belief about yourself to become more nuanced and adaptive. Your body recalibrates and empowers you to live more fully in the present (not in the past). As you are more present, you will orient with more hope and agency towards your future.
